AUSTIN, Texas — The Patriots owner is unhappy about the way his team is paying star linebacker Chandler Jones and says he will not sign the free agent.
Robert Kraft says it is his team and his team alone that has been underpaid.
Kraft and his wife, the team’s executive vice president of football operations, met with Jones and Patriots general manager Mickey Loomis at a hotel in Los Angeles on Friday.
Kawhi Leonard has emerged as a top target for the New England Patriots.
But Kraft says the team has not offered a new contract.
“They are the ones that are paying him,” Kraft said.
“It’s my team and my team alone.
We have been in a situation where we’ve made a lot of mistakes and I have to tell you, the people who are paying the bills, the owners and the people that own the teams, are the people responsible for the mistakes that have been made.”
Jones has been a starter since he entered the league in 2009 and has started in nine of the last 11 games for the Patriots.
He has made more than $80 million over four seasons, and he has been the NFL’s leading tackler in each of the past two seasons.
Kampff said he would not be surprised if Jones and Loomas agreed to a long-term deal that includes more than the $1.2 million signing bonus he was due.
