“We were very excited when we saw the ‘Star Empire’ trailer, but we weren’t expecting a Star Trek movie,” Lucasfilm chief creative officer Kathleen Kennedy told EW.
“We thought it was going to be a very different movie, but it was so much more than that.
There was a whole new galaxy to explore.
We wanted to take a look at the history of the galaxy and the past and the present of Star Wars and the Empire and the new hope of the Rebellion.
We also wanted to introduce new characters.
I’m a big fan of the original Star Wars, so I thought that was really exciting.
So we thought it would be great to revisit some of the old stuff, to get that same feeling that people have.
I think that’s a really great way to explore the mythology of Star Trek.
We’ll definitely revisit it.”
Kennedy also talked about her thoughts on how much of the Star Wars universe would return for “Star Wars Rebels,” which begins shooting in December.
“We were hoping to shoot in this particular galaxy, so we’re looking at a few different places,” she said.
“And we’re definitely looking to do a few more planets.
But we’re also exploring what the other side is like.
We’re exploring what happens in the galaxy with these other people, and that’s very important.
So it’s a different galaxy, it’s different galaxy.
We can’t see the other galaxy, but I think we’re exploring the same world, so hopefully we’ll see a lot of those other worlds and that universe.”
Kenneth also teased the return of her husband, George Lucas, as “The Last Jedi” opens in theaters December 15.
“I think George is really excited to get back on the big screen,” Kennedy said.
“[Star Wars] is a big part of his legacy.
And I think George really loves it.
So, I think it’s great that we can continue to explore it and be inspired by George’s legacy, which is an awesome thing.
I really love being able to do that.”
